NOTE: If you’re already a member and are interested in transferring to a different Post, please contact the new Post for assistance. It’s a very simple process but National Headquarters can’t transfer your membership without Post approval; the transfer must be approved and submitted by the new Post.
ELIGIBILITY DATES
Membership Requirements
An individual is eligible for membership in The American Legion if the individual has served in the Armed Forces of the United States at any time during
- the period of April 6, 1917, through November 11, 1918;
- any time after December 7, 1941.
Because eligibility dates remain open, all members of the U.S. Armed Forces are eligible to join The American Legion at this time, until the date of the end of hostilities as determined by the government of the United States.
Must have served at least one day of active military duty during one of the dates below and honorably discharged or still serving honorably. :
